SÁBADO + MOVIE = GASOLINA

Julio Hernández-Cordón presenta una película muy interesante acerca de la adolecencia. La historia es como la vida misma, irónica, bizarra, alegre, triste, y lo que sucede cuando se toman las cosas antes de tiempo, o talvez la falta de dirección/madurez. La fotografía es uno de lo factores que me llamó mucho la atención además de la ausencia de musicalización en todo el film, me pareció muy interesante.
Ojalá puedan verla aunque puede ser difícil encontrala fuera de Guatemala, pero si conocen a alguien que vive en el país seguro se los puede conseguir.
Por cierto el film se llevo el premio como mejor película latinoamericana en el Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián.

Julio Hernandez-Cordon presents a film about adolecence. The story is just like life itself, ironic, tragic, happy and all the things that happens when you do things before the right time or maybe the lack of maturity and guidence.
I hope you can check it out, even thought it can be hard to find outside Guatemala, but if you know somebody who actually lives there, they can easily find the DVD for you.

Btw this film was the winner as best latin-american film at Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián (Intenational Film Festiva of San Sebastian).

THE BARBER

Dale Mahin es un barbero local, con más de 40 años de servicio. La temática de su lugar de trabajo está inspirada en el rodeo, y su afición por los caballos, de echo el reloj que tiene colgado en la pared lo hizo el mismo de una silla de montar. Gracias Dale por la amabilidad y dejarme tomar estas fotos.

Dale Mahim is a local barber, with more than 40 years of service. The shop theme is inspired in the rodeo and his love for horses, in fact he even made a wall clock based on the horse's mount. Thanks Dale for your kindness and letting me take some pictures.

COBAIN: 16 YEARS LATER

El 5 de Abril de 1994, despareció un talentoso artista; su música pegó en el planeta entero, y un patojo se emociana con su música en un pequeño pueblo en el altiplano de Guatemala.
Kurt Cobain/Nirvana; marcó, influenció, inspiró, dejó huella, y el boom del rock se dejó sentir tanto que cúando me di cuenta mis amigos de la escuela ya tocaban guitarra, y los morralitos indígenas se volvieron un fashion trend a la véz que se respiraba un raro ambiente bohemio que yo nunca antes había experimentado, incluso se fundó un café frente al parque central de Totonicapán que se llamó The House Rock Café, el cúal servía de santuario para la manada de adolecentes con tendecias rockeras que salieron de no sé dónde.
Hoy en día el legado aún se deja sentir. Recientemente viajé de visita a Totonicapán, (hoy por hoy, al altiplano se le conoce por tener la cantidad más grande de rockeros del país) y un sábado por la tarde salí a caminar y me sorprendió ver a un grupo de música indie tratando de exponer su arte en el parque central ante un público que creo no los comprende a totalidad. Sabrá Dios cómo le hicieron para conseguir sus instrumentos y esa iluminación hecha con latas de frijoles y sardina.
Kurt Cobain triunfó. Yo creo que, él representó de manera literal, a través de su filosofía anti-corporativa, que podía lograr su sueño sin renunciar a ser él mismo, y ser un artista éxitoso.

On April 5, 1994, disappeared a very talented artist whose music shocked the whole world. A kid gets excited with his music somewhere in a small Guatemalan town.
Kurt Cobain/Nirvana influenced, inspired, smashed, and consequently the boom of rock music became so big and palpable that before I knew the kids at my school started playing guitar out of nowhere, and those messenger bags-like handcrafted by indigenous people soon became a fashion trend among kids. No doubt there was a bohemian feeling in the air I’ve never experienced before. I remember; a coffee shop named “The House Rock Café” was opened right in front of central park in Totonicapán, which started to become a sort of sanctuary for the kids and rock enthusiasts.
The legacy can still be felt; it is easy to find adolescents playing with their bands in Totonicapán’s central park, in front an audience that can’t really understand them. God only knows how they manage to obtain their instruments and that improvised illumination made out of food cans.
Kurt Cobain Triumphed. I believe, he literally represented through his anti-corporate philosophy, that he could accomplish his dream without stopping being himself, and become a successful artist.

THE MOVIE: LAST DAYS


Uno de mis directores favoritos, el talentoso Gus Van Sant nos presenta un film inspirado en lo que pudo ser los últimos días de vida de Kurt Cobain, y su consecuente deceso.
Filamada en Garrison, New York. El film trata de representar a Olympia, Washington, hogar de Cobain y mecca de la música independiente en Estados Unidos. La obra en sí es una belleza visual, la fotografía es impecable, el ritmo cautivador y la historia porsupuesto facinante.

Deben conseguir ésta película.

One of my favorite directors, the talented Gus Van Sant presents a film inspired in the what could have happened in the last days of life of Kurt Cobain followed by his tragic decease. This movie was filmed in Garrison, NY but is meant to represent Olympia Washington, once home of Cobain and mecca of the independent music scene in The U.S.
The film is a piece of visual beauty, the photography is impeccable, the rhythm so captivating and the story itself is of course fascinating.

This film is a must see, definitely.

THE BOOK: COBAIN UNSEEN


Hay varios libros acerca de Cobain: biográficos, recopilaciones de diarios personales, etc. Y en mi búsqueda por el libro perfecto para recomendarles a ustedes decidí postearles ésta publicación por parte de Charles R. Cross.

¿Porqué?

Éste libro es principalmente una foto-biografía, y como la fotografía nos apasiona tanto como el diseño gráfico, éste libro es capaz de volver loco a cualquier fan, es un fetiche total.
La fotografía es increíblemente bella, su mayoría son fotos tipo snapshots tomadas por los amigos, la familia y Cobain mismo, así que ya se imaginaran ustedes cuan íntimas son las fotos lo que le da una calidad documental invalualble a todo ése material fotográfico allí expuesto.
El diseño gráfico-editorial, es punto y aparte. No he visto semejante publicación editorial tan bella antes dedicada a la vida de un músico, nisiquiera las dedicadas a los Beatles se le comparan a ésta que le hicieron a Kurt. La diagramación es preciosa y el libro entero está lleno de sorpresas con cada página que uno va volteando. Podrán encontrar réplicas exactas en tercera dimensión de: tickets de conciertos, facturas, una foto tipo Polaroid donde Kurt sale junto a su gatito, una máscara plástica, una tarjeta conmemorativa que él hizo en la escuela cuando niño, un CD con grabaciones que Kurt hizo donde habla acerca de su vida personal y hasta una réplica de una hoja de cuaderno arrancada y doblada donde al abrirla se encuentra la letra de la canción Smells Like Teen Spirit escrita por el puño y letra de Cobain.

Personalmente estoy facinado con la ejecución del libro, así que ¡kudos! para los diseñadores, directores de arte, editores y el autor de ésta obra.

There are a lot of books about Cobain: biographies, diaries compilations etc. In search for the perfect book to recommend you I decided to post the publication by Charles R. Cross.

Why?

This book is mainly a photo-biography although it contains very valuable written material, so since we are quite fascinated with photography and graphic design, it seemed to me this was a good choice. The book is visually gorgeous and capable to drive nuts any fan.
The photography is really beautiful; many of the pics are snapshot style taken by friends, family and Cobain himself, so you can imagine how intimate the photos are which gives an invaluable documental quality to all the photographic material exposed.
The editorial/graphic design is really good. I haven’t seen anything like this before, not even the publications dedicated to The Beatles compares. I love the layout design, and the book itself is full of 3D memorabilia replicas that come as surprise as you turn the pages. Some of those replicas are: concert tickets, bills, a Polaroid picture featuring Kurt and his kitten, a greeting card he made in elementary school, a spoken word diary CD, and a tear sheet with the handwritten lyrics by Cobain of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

I am personally fascinated by the execution of the book, so kudos! to the designers, art directors, editors and the author.
